She seeks wool and flax, and works with willing hands.
She is like the ships of the merchant; she brings her food from afar.
She rises while it is yet night and provides food for her household and portions for her maidens.
Proverbs 31:13-15 ESV
This is probably one of the most exciting blog posts for me to write in this series we’re going through on Proverbs 31! It’s exciting because Proverbs 31:13 is where the name of this blog comes from. The ministry the Lord is using me to start is called With Willing Hands, because He has called me to do His work with willing hands, as unto the Lord. Doing God’s work is a pleasure, a joy, and a beautiful gift that I get to partake in. I urge you to find out what God’s calling is for your life. When you do, you will find so much peace in it that you won’t worry about doing it for you know He will be with you every step. What exactly does doing God’s work with willing hands look like? What if I don’t feel qualified? What if it’s hard and I don’t know where to start? I’m going to share some of what God has shown me on what the phrase “as unto the Lord” really means and I hope to challenge you to push onward and complete the race set before you with the upward call of God in Christ Jesus as your prize!
I press on toward the goal for the prize of the upward call of God in Christ Jesus. Philippians 3:14 ESV
First off, What does doing God’s work with willing hands even mean? It means to do the work set before you as if you were doing it for God himself! Even if it’s scrubbing toilets?! Yes even if it’s scrubbing toilets! ( Which is by far my least favorite chore to do, anyone agree?) Doing God’s work can look like simple chores around your house because you’re being a good steward of what He’s given you, or it could be doing your work at your job because that’s where He placed you. You don’t have to be in church ministry to do God’s work; wherever He has placed you is your mission field! Preach the gospel through your life; live it out in every way so that when people look at you they see Him! Now don’t get me wrong, I believe even if you are called to the corporate world you should still serve in your local church. Be it a door greeter, children’s ministry, or running media or building maintenance. The local church runs well when it’s members serve well. So serve at your church, lead a bible study, clean the bathrooms, take pictures for the media team, whatever it is just do it as unto the Lord!
Work willingly at whatever you do, as though you were working for the Lord rather than for people. Colossians 3:23 NLT
Now you might be thinking, that sounds good but what if i’m not qualified to do what God is asking me to do? Well then, I’d say your in good company! There are many examples in the Bible of God using unqualified people to do His work. From Gideon to the 12 disciples there are plenty of examples. However, I think the greatest example we’ve been given of this is King David. King David started out as David the young shepherd boy. He wasn’t even called to the meeting of Jesse’s sons when Samuel came to anoint the future king. He wasn’t called to the battle against the Philistines when He showed up with food for his brothers and ended up slaying Goliath! He was so under estimated. He was also no stranger to sin. He slept with a married woman and then had her husband killed so that he could cover up his sin. God still used David, He even called David a man after God’s own heart. If God can use an adulterer who had a man killed, then God can use you too! It doesn’t matter where we come from, it doesn’t matter what our past looks like, we can still be used by God to do great and extraordinary things for His glory!
Let your light shine before men in such a way that they may see your good works, and glorify your Father who is in heaven. Matthew 5:16 NASB
Those things God calls us to do can be hard. Sometimes it means giving up a dream or plan you had for your life, sometimes it means distancing yourself from certain relationships, sometimes it can be physically hard where it demands more than what you thing your capable of. But God. When what God has called you to looks hard and impossible for you to face, look to God! He will supply you with whatever you need through Christ Jesus to help you fulfill the calling He has placed upon your life. When you don’t know where to start because the calling looks to big and scary, pray. Praying to God for guidance will help you to see clearly the path set before you. God doesn’t want your calling to be scary or confusing for you, He want’s you to complete it! However, if we don’t focus on Him it can be scary and confusing because through our own power we can’t complete the call He has on our life. The second thing you should do when you don’t know where to begin is seek Godly counsel. When I first felt the call on my life to write I sought out counsel from some Christian writers and bloggers. They spoke into my life and most kept suggesting I start with a blog so I did. I have felt peace about it from the beginning. I know God wants me to write books eventually but I feel at this time this blog is the best tool to get me there. I wouldn’t have had much of an idea as to where to start if I hadn’t sought out counsel from experienced Christians. Lastly, I suggest you look into ways you can break up your calling into smaller steps. For me that first step on my calling to write was blogging. I’m not sure what the next step is but once it is revealed to me I will take it. You just need one stair in front of you to move up them! So get moving my friends!
My steps have held fast to Your paths. My feet have not slipped. Psalm 17:5 NASB
The Lord will direct your paths if you allow Him to. So allow Him to! He knows what’s best for your life, we don’t. Answer the call He has placed upon you and you will find there that there is peace that surpasses all understanding. So whatever you do, do it as unto the Lord! Even if it’s scrubbing toilets. ( I hear ya Lord!)
What is the calling God has placed on your life? I would love to hear it!
